The sunshine is carrying me through our collective grief, and I’m praying that our nation will experience her own spring. A melting away of ice and cold, bright crocus pushing through the snow. Birdsongs of justice and nest-building; a dream not yet fulfilled starting to be realized. A people of welcome and renewal and tending the earth. The system must crumble, the machine must shatter— and in its place, a garden. 🪏🌱🪺

I keep thinking of the mothers. How our babies share our very cells, the most basic part of our beings— and how their cells live in our bodies for decades after birth. How the phrase “heart outside my body” is truly how it feels; to watch our children hurting or suffering or heartbroken is worse than experiencing it ourselves. Our lives— our bodies, our souls— are so completely intertwined. Motherhood is learning to always hold joy and sorrow in the same hand.

So how can we turn away from our sisters? The broken mothers of Gaza, the lost mothers of ICE, the mothers who see their daughters in the stories of the Epstein survivors? The mothers struggling in silence with postpartum rage and anxiety, the Minnesotan mothers scared to leave their homes, the mothers searching for a heartbeat at this week’s ultrasound?

Our bodies always remember becoming mothers. I hope our souls do too.

Newly five years old, moved half a continent away from his mother. Every other week we would get an ultrasound at the Maternal Fetal Medicine building— each one facing the very real possibility of losing her, finding water in her lungs, or not finding a heartbeat. This project is for a family in a similar situation, and even more dire of circumstances. My human experience of a high-risk pregnancy and the desperate hope of loving someone before they’ve come earthside is what will be in each brushstroke. A prayer for the parents and the baby in every shade of blue or green or brown. Love sent in each critter’s face. The human connection captured on paper. 🕊️

This is my 34th Michigan winter and I’m determined to not spend the entire five months in a grumpy state of mind. It’s part of best practice for my art too, because creativity and emotion are intrinsically linked! Here’s my list (I’ve followed this for several years and have noticed a huge difference!):

— Everything stops when the sun peeks out. Sit in it like a cat, close your eyes, and feel the warmth.

— A GOOD PAIR OF BOOTS. Seriously.

— Let the house get cold at night and bundle up with blankets in bed; true wintertime sleep is the BEST.

— Turn the heat on each morning BY HAND. There is something about heading downstairs in slippers and a sweater to physically turn up the thermostat that just helps. Wireless or scheduled temperature changes make me feel out of touch with my body!

— A nightly cup of tea and biscotti.

— A car coat that is cozy but not puffy! I have a heavy winter coat that I never wear in the car because I will immediately get sensory overwhelm and hate everything. It’s great to wear to play in the snow but for the school commute it’s torture.

— Lamps, candles, or Christmas lights. Always.

Any other suggestions for folks settling into winter routines? ❄️

Two frogs, inspired by my grandparents, featuring their pet names for each other. My grandpa passed away four days before I finished this painting for their anniversary. I gave it to my grandma today, and she just kept saying how she wished he could have seen it. My grandpa passed away last Tuesday; it’s been a week of blessings equally mixed with sorrow. We kept my grandma’s house full of food and memories and flowers and children. Each of his children and grandchildren were able to say goodbye at the hospital, and I saw a beauty in my family that I never fully appreciated before— and one that I will work to never take for granted again.

Grandpa was a harbor throughout all the various storms of my life; he took all the pain and difficulty of his own and only let it make him softer and kinder.

I made his casket arrangement with juniper and sedum picked from his beloved garden the day after he passed, and locally grown dahlias and zinnias that he would have loved. At his burial, we each took a bloom and laid it in his grave as a final farewell until Heaven.

May your memory be eternal, Grandpa. We will love you all our days.

Collies were such a sweet part of my childhood; we lived with my grandparents on their farm when I was three, and their collie was my favorite creature in the whole world. My grandpa read “Grey Dawn”, the story of a brave collie, to my cousins and I in a cottage on Beaver Island— all thirteen of us spread out on the floor, listening to his soothing voice. And our own sweet Kodiak, the collie puppy I trained at nine years old based on a book written by monks, was my dearest friend until my teenage years. His thick fur held so many tears and his antics always made us laugh; I couldn’t resist including a mama collie and her pups in the Motherhood Collection!
